New owners (Dec 05) Jamie and Claire are busy renovating this beautiful little pub. The new menu consists of daily changing fresh home-cooked dishes, including at least three vegetarian options. The fish is as fresh as it can be and the cod or haddock in crispy beer batter can be purchased as a take away. There is an exciting salad menu too, which is consistent through summer or winter, rain or shine.

Families are welcome and the little monsters have their own menu. There is a lovely beer garden with a couple of guinea pigs & some play equipment.

Open Tues – Thursday 11am 3pm, 6pm – 11pm, Fri – Sun 11am – 12pm

Currently closed on a Monday

We had Sunday lunch here for Father's day - it was brill - so maybe we were in a different cricketers to the previous reviewer. I did have one of those pesky dogs in tow though :)
Great sunday lunch, freshly cooked meat + veg and home made yorkies - stuffed for the rest of the day. Service can be slow when they are busy but no surprise there - it is a local pub with limted resources. There is some decent beer to pass the time if you're waiting. On the day they had Hogs back or Timothy Taylor beers to choose from - both well cared for and good pints.

Took my father here for fathers day, SLOW service wasnt the word, felt pushed off table, staff shouting in kitchen NOT VERY PLESANT TO HEAR. Not oxfordshires friendliest pub, how on earth they can say that man behind bar very rude & unpleasant,my father thought it was an awful pint, didnt like the cats and dogs around our feet. Shame as we had good reports from friends.
Food was ok.

Mel you are right & I can only apologise.
About a month ago we noticed that some batter was being left on plates, especially with the plaice (the plaice dips in the middle & holds the oil) I ordered one for myself & realised that it was not up to scratch & immediately amended our batter recipe.

We take great pride in our reputation for good fish & chips, especially since the article in the Wallingford Herald which suggested that we have the best Fish & Chips in Oxfordshire.

Because some sub-standard battered fish slipped through the net (excuse the pun) and as no-one complained at the time, I welcome this opportunity to apologise publicly.
Mel if you would like to visit us again, please make yourself known & we will happily refund you.
Claire

Its very sad when some one feels the need to moan about stuff that is obviously uncontrollable at times, and in response to the comment about the sunday roast only being ok because you had a burnt yorkshire pudding and the veg was hard, well at least the yorkshire puddings are home made and it is more healthier for veg to be crunchy. You moaned because you had a wait when you could see that it was busy, and you would of had to of waited a whole lot longer for mushy veg and fresh yorkshire puddings maybe you should stick to cooking yourself at home then maybe you won't feel the need to moan so much.

I have to strongly disagree with the comments made by mrs M as I have eaten many times at the cricketers and have never had any thing bad to say about the food, the dining area or the cat. also many of my friends and family have also eaten in their resteraunt and have never had any complaints. If you felt that your experiance was bad then i recomend speaking to someone at the time so that the situation can be rectified as I know that none of the staff or management would want you to have gone away with a bad impression and would of done everything possible to put it right at the time of your visit. A big thankyou and well done to all staff and management at the cricketers, food, atmosphere and venue all get a 10 out of 10 from me.

My husband and i went to the pub sunday for a reccomended sunday lunch, lovely pub , BUT found resturant very cold, the food was OK apart from burnt huge yorkshire puddings that were soggy, veg rock hard and what had to be frozen cauli as water was running all over it. We waited 35 mins for the food in the cold room while next door was a lovely log fire shame there wasnt log fire in resturant..IF you dont like cats DO not come here i hate cats and my husband has allergies to them there its an awful ginger cat that would not leave the table although the staff who were obviously rushed off there feet tried ,the thing kept coming back, table behind were very upset about it.well done to the friendly couple behind bar, very friendly couple we did have a laugh with them, nice to have mature waiting staff.Afterwards had a lovely walk around a pretty village...

Having had lunch at The Cricketers quite a few times now .. I can thoroughly recommend it! Lovely place, lovely hosts and staff and the food is always fresh and cooked to order and all at a very reasonable price. Beautiful log fire too .. much appreciated on the cold winter days. It's how a village pub should be .. well done and keep up the good work!!!! :)

To KP: In all the time I have drank and been drunk in the Cric's I have never seen any of the regular drinkers falling over tables when people have been seated either eating or not. I have always thought that the regular drinkers have been very respectful to customers eating or wanting to eat, making sure they vacant tables so people wanting food can sit down when it gets busy, when smoking inside was still permitted! not standing around the tables smoking whilst people ate. Your comments just don’t sound right and I would really urge you to give the pub another try.

This saturday evening i enjoyed a refreshing time at this lovely pub had a meal with family celebrating a birthday, the food was fantastic and the atmosphere was great for such a small place infact it was packed the bar gent was excellent helped with every thing even take out for dogs, the customers were really friendly and made us welcome which can be unusual for a village. nice music and a chat with an irish man who made my mum laugh with his jokes, i wouldnt hesitate to return with my whole family and have some more blush wine which was very tasty and enjoyed.
Even having a cigeratte was a laugh talking to people who made us very welcome, thank-you to all in the criketers see you again in a few weeks. Its a shame there arent more pubs like this one.

kp, thats a terrible shame because the crics is a lovely place to eat drink and enjoy great company when people go out of an evening, the drink can sometimes make a person be merry thats why its called a pub. May be you should go in there with out your mum and let your self go!!!!!Also you will find there are some great people in this pub just like a big happy family.. Excellent night usually had by all.
